Orosius Paulus

Orosius Paulus
(early fifth century)
   Historian.
Orosius was a native of Spain, but in the face of the Vandal invasions of 414, he fled to Hippo in North Africa. He acted as a messenger for St Augustine to recruit jerome’s support against the Pelagians. When the teachings of pelagius were upheld at a council in Diospolis, Orosius was compelled to defend his own position. Then, in 417, encouraged by Augustine, he wrote his Historia Adversus Paganos, which rebuts the pagan charge that Rome was sacked by the Goths in 410 because the people had deserted the gods. The material from 378 to 417 has important historical value because its sources have not survived.
